Where to Eat at O’Hare International Airport (ORD)

Daniel Gerzina, Eater Chicago

Summer vacation season is almost here, which means spending that necessary time at the airport. To help alleviate some of the stress that will come from the inevitable delays atO’Hare International Airport (and to keep your stomachs happy), it’s time to re-run the Airport Dining Guides with some new additions.

As one of the busiest airports in the world, O’Hare has plenty of dining choices scattered throughout its many terminals and concourses. Whether you are looking for a quick bite to go or a full sit-down dining experience, Eater has listed out all of the options for you, including a few recommendations. Have a look and find some places to get your grub on so you can avoid airline food when you take to the skies.

Terminal 5 Additions

Nine additions are slated to open in the re-imagined Terminal 5 this year. Look for Hub 51, KOFE by Intelligentsia, Natural Break, Urban Olive, Tocco and Wow Bao to open at later dates, but two new ones have opened already.

Tortas Frontera: Another Rick Bayless location has opened beyond security in the international Terminal 5—but this one features dine-in as well as take away. Besides tortas, the outpost also serves cazuelas, fresh-made guacamole, hand-shaken premium margaritas and Intelligentsia Coffee. Get some award-winning Mexican food even if you’re flying to Mexico.

Big Bowl: The second Terminal 5 addition to open is another location of the popular Chinese-Thai spot Big Bowl. They’re cooking up satays, Sichuan and stir fry dishes in a similar vein to their four other Chicagoland locations. Gluten free options are also available.

O’Hare’s Seven Standouts

1) Tortas FronteraRick Bayless’ outstanding modern Mexican cuisine will make your flight delay a little more bearable. The main features are the griddle-baked tortas filled with meats such as chipotle chicken, beer-braised beef short ribs and pork chorizo. Also enjoy molletes, soups and salads and a guacamole bar. [Terminals 1 and 3, Gates B10 and K3]

2) Wicker Park Sushi Bar: Bringing a more refined dining experience to the airport, this 104-seat restaurant with sushi bar gives travelers the option of enjoying nigiri, sashimi, maki and specialty rolls like the Wicker Park tidal wave, the banana roll for dessert and the special veggie roll. Bonus: they serve sake, shochu, have a full bar and also have a quick sushi takeaway counter. [Terminal 2]

3) Wolfgang Puck Cafe: This restaurant location from the eponymous celebrity chef has full service, sit-down amenities. The full menu includes courses like pastas, rotisserie chicken, ribeye steak and pan-seared salmon as well as Puck’s signature four-cheese pizza and Chinois chicken salad. (Terminal 1, Gate B7; Terminal 3, Gates K1, K12)

4) America’s Dog: Chow down on a variety of hot dogs including the traditional Chicago-style dog, a Maxwell Street polish dog or a chicken dog. Burgers, sandwiches, salads, wraps and soup are also available. And if that’s not enough, try a fried Twinkie for dessert. [Terminal 1, Gate C18]

5) Berghoff Café: This dining spot has its own seating area and a selection of sandwiches ranging from breakfast creations to corned beef and a Rueben. Flatbread pizzas are also available alongside Berghoff beer drafts. [Terminal 1, Gate C26]

6) La Tapenade: A Mediterranean-themed café that offers flatbread pizzas, salads, wraps and grilled panini sandwiches. There’s also a full bar and an assortment of dessert pastries. [Terminals 1 and 2, Gates B5, E9 and F12]

7) Garrett Popcorn: Chicago’s cult-favorite popcorn shop. Try one of the signature flavors from butter and CheeseCorn to CaramelCrisp and watch in amazement as the bag quickly depletes. [Terminals 1 and 3, Gates B8 and H2]

2 Great Wine Bars

1) Beaudevin: This European-feeling wine bar features a granite-topped bar, chandeliers comprising wine glasses and more than 20 wines available by the glass, bottle of flights. Pair that with olives or figs, or various tartines like the roasted herb chicken, turkey berry with goat cheese or a Scottish smoked salmon. [Terminal 1 near Gate 17]

2) Bubbles Wine Bar: Settle in for a spell at this jazz club-like bar with soft blue lighting and a grand piano. Sparkling wine is the focus here (but craft beers shine, too) that pairs with various sushi rolls. [Terminal 3 near Gate H4]
